Redondo Beach, Los Angeles, CA: Four people were pulled from the ocean after their sailboat reportedly sank off the coast of Redondo Beach early Wednesday morning, Feb. 8, around 2:30 a.m.
Redondo Beach Police Department and fire department personnel received calls regarding a person shouting for help from out in the ocean heard by people standing on the Redondo Beach Pier/Boardwalk.
One of those people was Michael Welther, a local who was out on an early morning stroll when he heard the shouts for help. Micheal told Key News Network that he could hear yells for help coming from the pitch darkness.
A police/fire boat headed toward the area of the shouting and located at least three people floating in the water.
An RBFD Battalion Chief described off-camera how people were holding onto objects such as coolers and other personal objects from a sunken sailboat.
It is unknown how or why the sailboat sank in the water.
Personnel from the rescue boat were able to quickly locate the fourth occupant of the boat and all four were loaded onto the rescue boat and brought to the pier.
RBFD Paramedics assessed two Advanced Life Support (ALS) patients and two Basic Life Support (BLS) patients, all of whom were transported to area hospitals.
Officials have not made any attempt at a recovery effort for the sunken boat at this time.
