Whittier, Los Angeles County, CA: A man alleged of pistol whipping his family is in police custody after a six hour standoff/barricade that placed a nearby high school on lockdown Monday.
The incident began around 2:15 p.m., May 8, where according to Sheriff’s deputies, Whittier Police responded to the 6700 block of Gregory Avenue in the city of Whittier in regards to a pistol whipping.
A male subject reportedly aimed a revolver style handgun and pistol whipped one of the family members inside the home.
Multiple family members were able to evacuate the home, however, the suspect remained inside and refused to come out.
The incident was within close proximity to Whittier High School, prompting police to advise school officials to place the school on lockdown. The lockdown was a “soft” lockdown, and students were later released out the east side of campus in a secure manner around 3:45 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded to the scene and surrounded the location with armored vehicles, K-9, and SWAT trained deputies.
Deputies searched around the home and made contact with the suspect in the backyard around 8:15 p.m. The suspect surrendered peacefully, was taken into custody by LASD and later transferred into Whittier police custody.
No injuries were sustained by the suspect, and it is unclear if any of the original family members were hurt in the initial assault.
