Just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 911 operators received a call for a boat in distress claiming it had been run over by a large charter boat with multiple casualties. The caller also stated the yacht had stopped, looked at the people hurt, and fled the scene.
A large scale response was started toward the Madrona neighborhood to rescue the occupants of the boat and attempt to find the suspect yacht. Eventually the small boat drifted toward Madrona Park Beach on the 800 block of Lake Washington Boulevard.
Seattle Police, Seattle Fire Department and Seattle Police Harbor Patrol found the boat and began assessing patients.
Seven people were aboard the boat; five adult females were transported to the hospital and all were in stable condition, all people on the boat were accounted for, reported Kristin Tinsley, PIO with the Seattle Fire Department interviewed by Key News Network at the scene. Two more were injured, but did not need transport.
The captain of the small boat, Ted Dominguez, was also interviewed and was visibly shaken by the incident. He was out with friends, wanting to show them Seattle – some were from out of town and some never on a boat before. He said that as he came out from under the 520 underpass, and not too long after, they were struck by a boat. Dominguez said, “All of a sudden this boat just came on top of me … it was like a big shadow.” He said he did not see any lights on the boat. Dominguez said he has been boating for a very long time and is very experienced.
As of Monday, Aug. 22, the larger boat has yet to be located.
Tinsley said that if anyone sees a boat with damage on Lake Washington, call 911 which will alert Seattle Police.
