LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11 (KNN) — A man was struck and killed by a motorist who has since been arrested on suspicion of DUI Thursday night.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Carson deputies and California Highway Patrol South Los Angeles officers originally responded to the area of Vermont Avenue and Knox Street in the Harbor Gateway area within Los Angeles at approximately 10:45 p.m. regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian collision.
Arriving on scene, deputies and officers located a single male pedestrian down in northbound lanes unresponsive. Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter/paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
The driver was traveling northbound on Vermont Avenue in a beige BMW SUV when he struck the pedestrian. The SUV sustained visible front end damage and the driver remained at the scene.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division officers took over the scene and conducted field sobriety tests on the driver.
After multiple tests, they administered a breathalyzer on the suspect before placing him into custody.
A long term closure of the intersection was in effect until the investigation was completed and the scene was cleared.
LAPD’s South Traffic Division will be handling the investigation.
