Armed Off-Duty Sheriff’s Deputy Fatally Shot by Fontana Police on Golf Course

FONTANA, CA, Aug. 15 (KNN) — Fontana Police Department officers were involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect allegedly armed on a golf course late Tuesday afternoon. The suspect has been identified Wednesday as an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, according to the sheriff’s department.

According to the Fontana Police Department, officers were dispatched to a home on the 16600 block of Colonial Drive in Fontana shortly before 4 p.m. for a reported shooting.

Officers learned from the reporting party that her husband had fired a gun at a wall inside their home and then left while holding the firearm.

Shortly after, the police received multiple calls regarding a man carrying a gun in the Sierra Lakes community, according to the Fontana PD. Officers quickly arrived in the area and confronted a suspect on the golf course of the Sierra Lakes Golf Club on the 16600 block of Clubhouse Drive, following reports of an armed man near the Sierra Lakes clubhouse.

The Fontana PD reported a lethal force encounter occurred after several verbal commands were given to the suspect by officers.

“Immediately after the shooting, officers, including two technical reserve paramedics, provided advanced life-saving measures while San Bernardino County fire medics arrived and continued medical treatment. The male suspect was taken to a local hospital and pronounced deceased,” the Fontana PD stated in a press release.

Officers involved in the incident were unharmed, according to the Fontana PD.

The Fontana PD reported that the department is cooperating fully with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office who assumed the investigation.

The identity of the deceased will not be released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner before notification of family members.

“The Fontana Police Department understands the impact this incident has on our community and law enforcement as a whole and are dedicated to maintaining open lines of communication and fostering trust with our community as we work through this challenging situation,” stated the press release.
