Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Freight Train in Somis

SOMIS, CA, Aug. 30 (KNN) — A pedestrian was fatally struck by a train early Wednesday morning in the city of Somis.

Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies and fire departments responded to reports of a train versus pedestrian collision shortly before 7 a.m. in the 3100 block of Somis Road.

The victim was struck by a northbound Union Pacific local freight train headed to a lumber yard nearby.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A witness stated off camera that he saw a group of field workers having a meeting near the tracks with their supervisor standing directly on the tracks.

A crew member aboard the train told the witness they blew their horn to warn the victim, but he did not react in time.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
