Shortly after 9:30 a.m. an explosion was reported over Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department radios with a request for units to respond to the North County Correctional Facility at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.

Units from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to support a critical transport to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

The injured deputies, including a 21-year LASD veteran assigned to NCCF and a 17-year LASD veteran assigned to the Sylmar courthouse, were put into patrol cars and rolled south to the trauma center.

Firefighters engaged with hand lines to try to suppress the fire which threatened another trailer and a nearby building.

Crews used an excavator to open one end of the trailer to make the firefight more effective.

No additional injuries were reported to responding units as of 1:13 p.m. All LASD mobile ranges have been shut down pending an investigation.

Doctors say they are giving the best care possible to the injured deputies.
