Los Angeles, CA: California Highway Patrol had both north and southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway shut down due to an officer-involved shooting around 2:50 a.m. Thursday, Apr. 14, on the Southbound 405 Freeway near Skirball Center Drive.

CHP reported that officers stopped to investigate a damaged Ford Mustang with airbags deployed on the side of the freeway. A man was standing nearby when officers approached the vehicle. The man then reached into the vehicle, pulled out a gun and started shooting at officers, according to CHP. The officers fired back striking the man who was transported by ambulance to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in unknown condition, reported CHP. No officers were injured, but some rounds struck a patrol vehicle.
CHP reported northbound lanes were opened around 5 a.m. The southbound lanes remained closed throughout the morning rush hour traffic causing many motorists to find alternate routes from the San Fernando Valley to the Westside. The remaining freeway lanes reopened around 1:00 p.m.
The circumstance surrounding the damaged Mustang is unclear at this time and whether the man was the owner of the car. It is also not known why the man opened fire on the officers.
