Simi Valley Police Department officers responded to a reported “weapon in progress” call just after 6:30 a.m. from a residence in the 1200 block of Newman Street. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the residents who stated there was an unknown subject in their backyard, according to the SVPD. When one of the residents confronted the subject, a firearm was produced and the subject pointed the gun at one of the residents. The suspect then fled the location shortly after.

The area was quicky contained as officers searched for the outstanding suspect. The SVPD said that as officers searched the area, another resident from the 1000 block of Hillview Lane called the police department and reported a trespass of a subject that matched the description of the suspect they were initially seeking. Officers responded to the area, located the suspect and detained him.

According to calls from surrounding residents and further investigation into the incident, it appears that the suspect was prowling in the area and attempted to steal two vehicles in the neighborhood and stole property from a third vehicle, stated the SVPD. Officers searched the neighborhood and located the stolen property but did not locate the firearm.

The SVPD has identified the suspect as 38-year-old Kevin Dessaint, a resident of Sylmar, California. The suspect was booked at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Pre-Trial Detention Facility for assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of attempting to steal a vehicle and theft from a vehicle.
