The incident unfolded shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon on Lyons Avenue east of Walnut Street in the Newhall area of Santa Clarita, when a van slammed into a gate as it came to a rest on the sidewalk.

Deputies responding to a separate auto-versus-pedestrian call in the same area, came across the scene and spent several minutes performing CPR on the van’s driver who, at the time, was not showing signs of life.

Firefighters, paramedics and EMTs arrived a short time later and joined the deputies.

Crews thanked the deputies for performing CPR and said it may have well saved the man’s life.
