The California Highway Patrol was alerted to a big rig that was stolen at a gas pump around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. CHP was advised that the owner’s cell phone was still inside the truck.

CHP officers were able to locate the big rig from detailed coordinates provided by the owner who was able to track the truck.

The big rig failed to stop for the CHP which prompted a pursuit from the I-5 at Calgrove to the eastbound 210 Freeway where the truck came to a stop on the shoulder of the freeway near the Haven Avenue exit in the city of Rancho Cucamonga.

Spike strips were deployed twice during the pursuit and the vehicle’s tires begin to lose tread, slowly spark and catch fire leading to the entire cab to become engulfed in flames.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot and was apprehended by San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies. A CHP K-9 unit was observed at the scene and the suspect was seen being placed into a Rancho Cucamonga Police Department patrol vehicle.
