The incident unfolded at approximately 3:15 p.m. Tuesday when Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 3300 block of 15th Street West for a reported violation of a restraining order.

Deputies assigned to the East Kern area attempted to contact the 24-year-old Hispanic male subject, but he barricaded himself in a room inside a residence and refused to come out, reported the KCSO.

While it is not immediately clear how long the barricade lasted, the KCSO updated the incident in the early morning hours of Wednesday stating that after negotiating with the suspect, he exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect has been identified by authorities as Joseph Nelson, who was arrested and booked into the Lerdo Jail for resisting arrest, violation of a court order, criminal threats and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Initial information from the scene indicated the suspect had brandished a firearm and was making suicide by cop threats before barricading inside the home.

The incident had prompted a massive response from the KCSO along with SWAT, hostage negotiators, the Bakersfield Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at (661) 861-3110 or Secret Witness at (661) 322-4040. Case number 2024-00030008.
