LAPD Officers Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in South Los Angeles

SOUTH LOS ANGELES, May 20 (KNN) — A confrontation with a man armed with a knife Sunday evening, led to a fatal shooting of the suspect by Los Angeles Police Department officers.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., officers with LAPD’s Southeast Division responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon suspect in the 200 block of Colden Avenue in the Broadway-Manchester neighborhood within South Los Angeles.

Upon arrival, officers were confronted by the suspect, described as a male in his 30s who was armed with a knife, according to the LAPD.

“The officers immediately exited their patrol vehicle and gave the suspect commands. The armed suspect advanced toward the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” said the LAPD.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken into custody, then was transported by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to the LAPD.

There were no officers or bystanders injured during this incident. The LAPD reported that the suspect’s knife was recovered at the scene.

Colden Avenue from Main to Spring Street was closed for several hours due to the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, with internal LAPD review of the incident along with the District Attorney’s Office per protocol for an officer-involved shooting.
