The Los Angeles Police Department’s Topanga Division officers responded to a welfare check call Tuesday evening at a residence in the 23000 block of Burbank Boulevard. The home appeared to be under construction.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a newborn baby unconscious and not breathing.

According to a spokesperson for the LAPD, a 1-day-old female infant was found at the residence and the mother of the infant was found at a hospital. The cause of the infant’s death is undetermined at this time.

The welfare check at the residence may have been prompted by the condition of the mother at the hospital.

LAPD officers were still at the location as of 2 a.m. Wednesday, with a tent possibly covering the body of the infant. Personnel from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner were due to respond. A crime scene had been established at the location.

The incident is under active investigation, according to the LAPD.
