Homicide Investigation Into Death of Man in Newhall Reveals Accidental Self-Inflicted Injury

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a call for a gunshot victim around 8:21 p.m. Friday evening at The Village Apartment Homes in the 23700 block of Valle del Oro.

Fire department personnel arrived at the scene and found a man lying in the middle of the roadway unconscious and not breathing at Villa Canon and Via Estrella within the apartment complex.

After lifesaving attempts, the 35-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to authorities.

Responding deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station requested additional units for crowd control as they began a homicide investigation.

As the investigation unfolded, it became apparent that the cause of death may not have resulted from a gunshot wound as originally reported.

It wasn’t until Saturday morning that the LASD Homicide Bureau released an Incident Alert regarding the deceased man stating that detectives have determined the injury was not caused by a firearm, but rather an apparent accidental, self-inflicted injury while attempting to jump a nearby wrought iron fence. However, the incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this incident can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
