The California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs Area office is investigating a fatal traffic collision that left a driver dead in lanes on the northbound 605 Freeway south of the 60 Freeway in the unincorporated area of Avocado Heights shortly before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
According to Sgt. Daniel Keene, a spokesperson for the CHP Southern Divsion, a high-speed vehicle collided with a pylon on the shoulder, which caused the solo occupant to be ejected onto the freeway. The vehicle caught fire and split in half, coming to rest in lanes.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the driver deceased.
The CHP closed all northbound lanes of the 605 Freeway and diverted traffic at Rose Hills Road. According to Keene, the freeway reopened at 4:20 a.m. following the arrival of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, and the roadway cleared of debris.
