SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 23 (KNN) – An altercation resulted in the shooting of two passengers in an autonomous ridesharing vehicle late Sunday night in Santa Monica.

Santa Monica police responded to a shooting at the intersection of 2nd Street and Broadway around 11:38 p.m. According to initial radio traffic from the California Highway Patrol, a juvenile was shot by an unknown suspect who was last seen fleeing the area.
Lt. Lewis Gilmore, Executive Officer – PIO with the Santa Monica Police Department, reported that two juveniles were shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a local hospital and are currently in stable condition; one was shot in the arm, and the other in the torso. The victims were passengers inside an autonomous rideshare vehicle at the time of the shooting.
According to Gilmore, the shooting was an isolated and targeted incident that followed a verbal altercation earlier in the evening between the victims and the suspect. The suspect approached on foot while the victims were inside the Waymo vehicle and fired multiple rounds before fleeing the scene.
At least four shell casings were found nearby. Three bullet holes were visible in the passenger window of the car as seen in the Key News Network video from the scene.
The age and gender of the victims have not been disclosed.
According to Gilmore, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives are reviewing video footage and pursuing all leads.
