Vehicle Slams into Taco Stand: 1 Killed, 12 Injured

Pomona, Los Angeles County, CA: The Pomona Police Department confirmed there were a total of 13 victims – one fatality, three critically injured – after a vehicle slammed into a roadside taco stand in the city of Pomona late Friday evening.

Pomona Police Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a traffic collision around 7:43 p.m. Oct. 14, with multiple victims on the 1600 block of West Holt Avenue.

Once officers and firefighters arrived on scene, they located a black vehicle that crashed through a taco stand striking multiple victims. One victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by firefighters. Three victims were transported to Pomona Valley Hospital in critical condition.

The 26-year-old female driver, a Pomona resident, fled the scene right after the collision occurred, according to Aly Mejia, Public Information Coordinator, Pomona PD.

A Claremont Police Department K-9 unit arrived at the scene with a bloodhound to help search for the driver, however, PPD reported that more than an hour later, the driver returned to the scene and was was taken into custody at 10:41 p.m. She was assessed by firefighters, then transported to Pomona Valley Hospital in unknown condition.

Field Sobriety Tests were to be administered to the driver, however, it is currently undetermined if driving under the influence was a factor in the collision.

PPD stated in a Saturday news release that the female suspect was arrested and booked at the Pomona City Jail. She has been charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, a felony, and felony hit-and-run causing death/injury.

The identification of the deceased will not be released pending notification to the family.

Pomona PD had east and westbound Holt Avenue between Erie and Dudley streets closed as they conducted their investigation.

Witnesses at the scene spoke of the devastating incident and how there should be some way to protect street vendors.
