Pomona, Los Angeles County, CA: A major water pipe ruptured, flooding multiple units in a building just after midnight Monday morning where firefighters had just extinguished flames on the roof.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded overnight to the smell of smoke and an explosion on the roof of a building on the 100 block of East Monterey Avenue in the city of Pomona.
Once firefighters arrived on scene they could see heavy smoke, and some flames on the roof near an AC unit.
Firefighters extinguished the fire, but also noticed that a major water pipe had ruptured causing water to leak into multiple units in the building.
As of 1:30 a.m. Dec. 19, a total of 16 units had major water damage from the fourth floor down to the first floor.
LACoFD Battalion Chief requested a total of three ladder trucks to assist with water push.
Multiple residents were evacuated and waiting outside.
It is unknown at this time if Red Cross was contacted to assist with housing displaced residents.
Key News Network interviewed Michael, a fourth floor resident of the building, who described the incident on camera. He said he and his wife were in bed when they smelled smoke, then all of a sudden heard crackling in the walls and a big explosion. Water then starting pouring down from the walls of his apartment.
Michael said the water was deep enough inside his apartment to cover your foot if you were to step in it.
