Downey, Los Angeles County, CA: A mother and daughter lost their lives from injuries sustained in an apartment fire and another victim, reportedly the girl’s grandmother, suffered injuries and was hospitalized.
Firefighters were observed administering CPR to one of the transported victims. The Downey Fire Department reported in an update that a minor was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The mother died at the scene and the daughter is reported to have died at County-USC Medical Center. Their names were withheld pending notification of relatives.
The fire department also reported two family pets did not survive the fire.
The residential fire was reported at 10:47 p.m., Dec. 20, on Tweedy Lane and Dinsdale Street.
Responding Downey PD and firefighters reported a residential complex with flames and heavy smoke showing from the garage and roof with potential exposure to nearby units.
Firefighters quickly made access to the flames and held the fire to the involved unit.
Downey Fire called for a 2nd alarm for more support as firefighters started a search of the residence and discovered the victims.
Crews extinguished the flames in 25 minutes and fire officials said the flames appeared to have started in the garage and spread to the apartment.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
