Deputy Dies from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound at Bar in Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County, CA: The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Information Bureau reported that a male found at a Santa Clarita bar with a fatal gunshot wound was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy.

The shooting took place shortly before 1:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Mabel’s Roadhouse on the 26300 block of Bouquet Canyon Road, north of Valencia Boulevard.

Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and located an adult male suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, according to the sheriff’s department. Paramedics transported the male to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s department identified the male as 33-year-old Deputy Jonathan Buchan, a 3 1/2 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Buchan was off-duty at the time of the incident.

The investigation is being handled by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
