Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, CA: Ten people were killed and at least 10 wounded in a mass shooting at a business on the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue in the city of Monterey Park Saturday night, Jan. 21.
Around 10:22 p.m., Monterey Park Police Department responded to a local business regarding a shots fired call. When offices arrived on scene, they found numerous patrons of the business pouring out of the location and screaming, according to Captain Andrew Meyer with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Officers entered the business and located additional victims.
“The Monterey Park Fire Department responded to the scene and treated the injured, and pronounced 10 of the victims deceased at the scene. There were at least 10 additional victims that were transported to numerous local hospitals and are listed in various conditions – from stable to critical,” said Meyer speaking to the press at the scene. The suspect fled the location and remains outstanding.
The homicide bureau is working closely with Chief Scott Wiese and his agency with the Monterey Park Police Department, California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the FBI Los Angeles office and numerous other law enforcement agencies, stated Meyer.
As far as motive, it is too early in the investigation to know what the motive is for the shooting, according to Meyer. There is no description of the suspect available at this time. A firearm was used, but there is no further information as to what type.
Investigators were on the scene of a shooting incident in Alhambra Saturday night, trying to determine if there is a possible connection to the Monterey Park shooting, said Meyer when asked about the Alhambra incident.
Multiple police and fire departments from surrounding areas responded to the scene to assist Monterey Park Police Department.
Chief Wiese said out of an abundance of caution and reverence for the victims, the Lunar Festival that took place on Saturday and was due to continue on Sunday, has been cancelled.
At an early Sunday morning news conference by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Luna did not have much additional information to add except that the suspect was an Asian male.
There will be more information released as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call L.A. Sheriffs Homicide at (323) 890-5500 or if you prefer to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
