California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a traffic collision just before 2:00 a.m., Apr. 8, with two people trapped on the westbound 60 Freeway at the Garey Avenue exit.

Once CHP and firefighters arrived on scene, they located two vehicles with both drivers trapped.

One severely damaged vehicle was found off the freeway and the trapped driver inside was pronounced deceased at the scene by firefighters.

The deceased, unidentified victim was removed from the vehicle by firefighters in preparation for the arrival of coroners.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to cut the door off the heavily damaged black vehicle on the freeway and freed the driver who was then transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The black car was the vehicle suspected of traveling eastbound in westbound lanes on the freeway.

DUI is the suspected factor in the cause of the wrong-way crash.

CHP had all lanes temporarily closed at the time of the collision and issued a SigAlert for three hours.
