Dog Trapped in Storm Drain Rescued by Firefighters

AVOCADO HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES COUNTY, June 23 (KNN) – A small dog was found trapped inside a storm drain in need of rescue Friday afternoon on a residential street in the Avocado Heights neighborhood within the San Gabriel Valley.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call just before 4 p.m. from the 1500 block of Delamare Drive regarding a dog that became trapped inside a storm drain.

Once on scene, firefighters worked to locate and access the dog and tried luring the animal out with hot dogs and treats, but when that attempt proved to be unsuccessful, the department’s Urban Search and Rescue team was summoned to the location.

Firefighter Denice Lopez with LACoFD’s Urban Search and Rescue said she was down in the drain hole well protected by her gloves and turnouts as she attempted to rescue the very skittish dog that was biting out of fear.

Eventually the dog was pulled out, and once back outside, the dog was calm as it received attention from firefighters at the scene.

It is currently unclear as to how the dog became trapped inside the drain.

Lopez said there is no identification on the dog and they were hoping one of the neighbors would come outside and maybe recognize the dog.
