Compton Fire Department paramedics and Los Angeles County Compton deputies responded to the 2200 block of East Rosecrans Avenue near North Harris Avenue shortly after 2:30 a.m. regarding a solo vehicle collision.

Authorities arrived to discover that an SUV traveling eastbound on Rosecrans Avenue plowed into a tree, a bus stop, and a fire hydrant before coming to a stop 40-feet down the road.

Two occupants were located in the SUV – a male driver and a female passenger. The male driver was able to step out of the SUV uninjured while the female passenger suffered major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.

Firefighters eventually discovered that wrapped within the mangled bus stop was an individual, clearly deceased with major trauma.

A resident off camera stated it was a female transient who is known to frequently sleep on the bus bench.

The male driver was detained by sheriff’s deputies, although drug or alcohol factors remain uncertain at this time.

All directions of Rosecrans Avenue were closed between Butler Avenue and Muriel Avenue until further notice.

This incident happened about 24 hours after seven sleeping homeless people were hurt by a Tesla when it flew off the I-10 Freeway in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.
