Downey police officers, Downey firefighters, the South Gate Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to assist in a reported major disturbance at the Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall on the 7200 block of East Quill Drive. The sheriff’s department helicopter provided air support.

At approximately 8 p.m., a major disturbance occurred at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall where youth assaulted staff and one youth was able to exit the secure perimeter of the facility, according to a statement by the Los Angeles County Probation Department. The youth was immediately apprehended by Probation Special Enforcement Operations officers. All youths were accounted for.

“Youth and staff who were impacted by the disturbance are being evaluated by medical staff; however, no serious injuries to youth or staff were reported,” the probation department stated.

According to various online news sources, the facility initially opened in 1957 to house hundreds of boys and girls and was closed in the summer of 2019 due to the condition of the hall and issues that plagued the facility.

The juvenile hall had just recently reopened after approval from the County Board of Supervisors in May, 2023.
