Whittier Officer, Suspect Wounded in Shooting

WHITTIER, CA, July 31 (KNN) – A Whittier Police Department officer was injured in an officer-involved shooting late Monday evening.

The situation unfolded when Whittier PD requested the assistance of a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s helicopter shortly after 8:30 p.m. in regards to a pursuit in progress. It was unclear if this was a vehicle or foot pursuit.

Shortly thereafter, the helicopter requested additional assistance from Norwalk and Pico Rivera deputies to respond to the area of Pickering Avenue and Mar Vista Street in Whittier regarding shots fired with an officer down.

At least one officer was struck by gunfire and transported to Los Angeles General Hospital in unknown condition. A suspect was also struck by gunfire and transported to the hospital in unknown condition.

A person who was at a nearby park told Key News Network on camera what he had heard in the moments during the situation.

This was a large crime scene and numerous officers and deputy personnel blocked off the area.

There is currently no additional details.
