The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to multiple trash can fires in the area of Sherman Way and Fulton Avenue in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Firefighters responded to approximately five separate trash can fires on Riverside and the surrounding streets.

Citizens reported seeing a suspect in the area lighting the trash cans on fire.

After a short period of time, LAFD received a call for a structure fire in the 4600 block of North Nagle Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters observed a trash can on fire in front of a home and fire inside the home itself. A large glass window appeared to be broken

Fire extended into the attic, but firefighters were able to achieve knockdown shortly after 2 a.m.

Los Angeles police officers then located a possible suspect who had just stolen an unknown item from a 7-Eleven at Moorpark Street and Fulton Avenue matching the description of the alleged arsonist.

The suspect was taken into custody by LAPD without incident and was covered in oil at the time of the arrest.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, LAFD confirmed these fires are “intentional acts” and that “a suspect has been arrested.”

The fires still remain the focus of an ongoing LAFD/LAPD investigation.
