MID-CITY, LOS ANGELES, July 29 (KNN) — A burglary suspect allegedly armed with a knife was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers after barricading in a residence in the Mid-City neighborhood within Central Los Angeles.
The incident unfolded early Monday morning around 3:20 a.m. when LAPD officers with West Los Angeles Division were dispatched to a burglary in the 2600 block of Halm Avenue.
A person called 911 reporting that suspects ran inside his home and started a fire, according to initial information.
Arriving officers detained possible suspects near the home and then noticed smoke coming from the residence, according to the LAPD. The Los Angeles Fire Department was requested to the scene.
When firefighters arrived and entered the home, they discovered a man armed with a knife, according to the LAPD. Firefighters exited the home and the LAPD promptly set up a containment around the residence. SWAT responded to the scene.
“Around 7:05 a.m., the suspect exited the house armed with a knife and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire and died at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident,” stated the LAPD on X.
It is currently unclear if the 911 caller remained in the residence the entire time, or somehow managed to escape. The extent of fire damage to the home is also currently unknown.
There is also no suspect information at this time.
