SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Feb. 1 (KNN) — A man accused of swinging a machete at a sheriff’s deputy outside an elementary school was captured and transported to a hospital after an hours-long standoff.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, in Santa Clarita’s Canyon Country neighborhood outside Canyon Springs Elementary School on Vicci Street.
The elementary school was locked down as a precaution as deputies formed their containment and conducted their business at a home across the street.
The LASD Special Enforcement Bureau was called in to respond to the scene. The man was captured shortly before 8:30 p.m. in the 27400 block of Plumwood Street.
The suspect’s neighbor, Oscar Ricalday, spoke on-camera with Key News Network and said he has always felt safe in the area and now he has an uneasy feeling after hearing the commotion surrounding the incident and it happening so close to the school.
The incident put things into perspective for Ricalday who said, “No matter where you are, no mater how safe you think you are, it could happen in your neighborhood.”
