Barricaded Suspect With Pickaxe Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff in North Hollywood

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 (KNN) — A barricaded suspect with an allegedly stolen pickaxe was taken into custody late Thursday evening after an hours-long standoff in North Hollywood.

Los Angeles Police Department North Hollywood Division officers, LAPD SWAT and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call of a barricaded suspect related to a reported robbery. The suspect allegedly stole a pickaxe from a nearby Home Depot store.

The suspect barricaded behind a couch near a railway in the 7000 block of Tujunga Avenue near Vanowen Street. Trains were stopped from operating during this incident.

After the arrival of SWAT, a standoff lasted several hours. LAPD SWAT deployed less-than-lethal rounds along with some gas and finally apprehended the suspect.

According to information at the scene, the suspect damaged an LAPD robot that was used during the standoff to monitor the suspect. An LAPD K-9 unit arrived at the scene but was not deployed in this incident.

LAFD paramedics placed the suspect inside an ambulance with unknown injuries and transported the suspect to a local hospital.

All train operations resumed once the incident was cleared.
