Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA: A man escaped injury after a collision and flipping over his white sedan, causing it to catch fire in the middle of the 405 Freeway early Friday morning.
Long Beach firefighters and California Highway Patrol South Los Angeles officers received multiple reports of a rollover traffic collision on the northbound I-405 at North Temple Avenue shortly before 12:30 a.m., May 19.
A news photographer first to arrive on scene observed traffic approaching quickly with bystanders attempting to set out road flares and others utilizing fire extinguishers in an effort to douse the flames from the wrecked overturned sedan.
The solo driver was able to exit the vehicle prior to it catching fire and run to the right shoulder.
Fire department personnel arrived and quickly extinguished the blaze. The driver appeared to be uninjured and declined paramedic transport to a hospital.
One additional vehicle – a work truck – appeared to be involved, though that vehicle only sustained minor damage with that driver also uninjured.
All northbound lanes were temporarily blocked for about 20 minutes.
