The incident was reported shortly after 6:15 p.m. at Sonora High School, located at 401 South Palm Street in La Habra.

LACoFD firefighters, who serve the city of La Habra, arrived to locate a single calf that had jumped a fence from the high school’s farming area and landed into the canal.

A school worker made their way down to the calf to find that it was still able to walk. The LACoFD USAR team responded to the canal and utilized a heavy rescue truck to lift the calf out of the canal and to safety.

Once back on the property, firefighters removed all safety harnesses before giving the calf back to school staff.

The calf was able to walk back onto the school property on its own with school personnel. Sonora High School is part of the Fullerton Joint Union High School District known for having multiple high schools participate in agricultural studies, many of which have livestock present on their school campuses.

The rescue took about 20 minutes to complete.
