Catalytic Converter Theft Suspects Apprehended After Multi-Freeway Pursuit

Florence-Firestone, Los Angeles, CA: A call to authorities from a victim of a catalytic converter theft from their vehicle in Rowland Heights early Wednesday morning, Oct. 26, led to a pursuit and eventual apprehension of the suspects in the unincorporated area of Florence-Firestone in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Walnut Station received a 911 call around 1:30 a.m. from a homeowner in the city of Rowland Heights stating they saw somebody underneath their car stealing their catalytic converter.

The homeowner said they could see the suspect putting something in the trunk of the suspect vehicle and leaving the scene.

An LASD deputy happened to spot the vehicle on Colima and Fullerton roads when the suspect entered the eastbound 60 Freeway from Fullerton Road. LASD attempted to pull over the vehicle but the suspect fled, prompting a pursuit.

Sheriff’s deputies canceled the pursuit due to unsafe speed on the southbound 57 Freeway from the 60 Freeway.

An LASD airship located the vehicle southbound 57 Freeway at the 91 Freeway. The suspect entered the westbound 91 Freeway where California Highway Patrol was in position to take on pursuit of the suspect vehicle.

A second pursuit ensued with CHP Santa Fe Springs officers. The suspect traveled multiple freeways and ended up in the Florence-Firestone area of Los Angeles where two suspects fled the vehicle on foot at Converse and Gage avenues.

The driver was tased and taken into custody by South LA CHP. A second suspect was also taken into custody a block down from where they left the vehicle.

A catalytic converter and a jack were located in the trunk of the suspects’ vehicle.
