Classroom Destroyed by Fire at School in Santa Clarita, Arson Investigation Underway

SANTA CLARITA, CA, Sept. 4 (KNN) — One classroom was destroyed by a fire and seven others by smoke after flames erupted from a school in Santa Clarita.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to the 25100 block of Avenida Rondel for a fire alarm call at Old Orchard Elementary School,

Upon arrival, crews from Fire Station 73 found heavy smoke and fire inside a 5th grade classroom.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one classroom, said Battalion Chief Kevin DeJong with the Los Angeles County Fire Department at the scene.

The fire was knocked down shortly after.

Crews continued to respond to mitigate significant smoke damage inside seven other classrooms.

Newhall School District officials are working to determine if any of the eight damaged classrooms are inhabitable.

Sheriff’s department arson investigators were requested to immediately respond to the scene.

Investigators are working to determine if an incident involving significant vandalism at a Catholic elementary school about a 1/4 mile away is connected to Sunday night’s blaze.
