Deputies held vigil at Kuredjian’s memorial site at Poe Parkway and Stevenson Ranch Parkway beginning at midnight and plan to continue until midnight Friday.

The slain deputy’s mother and brother, Ventura County Sheriff’s Commander Garo Kuredjian joined family, friends and current and retired LASD personnel at the site.

Capt. Justin Diez with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station also spoke at the memorial Thursday morning of Jake Kuredjian’s commitment to the department and the community.

Diez said Jake is not only honored at the memorial, but also the Jake Kuredjian Park in Stevenson Ranch, Deputy Jake Way in Newhall and at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.

“At our sheriff’s station, his picture is proudly displayed on the wall in the memorial hallway and on the wall in our memorial patio. His locker and his flag are also proudly displayed in our learning center which is a room that was dedicated to Jake,” said Diez.

The 17-year sheriff’s department veteran was shot and killed on August 31, 2001 as he provided aid to another deputy and United States Marshalls who were attempting to serve a search warrant on the 26400 block of Brooks Circle in Stevenson Ranch.

The house at that location burned down to the ground as gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and responding law enforcement.
