Pico Rivera, Los Angeles County, CA: A large crime scene had shut down Rooks Road in both directions near the Pico Rivera Sports Arena where one pedestrian was struck and killed and one injured by a hit-and-run driver late Sunday night, Mar. 12, in the city of Pico Rivera.
The call came out shortly before 11:30 p.m. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s dispatchers alerted deputies to two people down in the roadway, unknown circumstances. California Highway Patrol dispatchers also received the call regarding two pedestrians that were struck by a hit-and-run driver.
Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responded and transported at least one victim from the scene to a local trauma center while a second victim died at the scene.
Three adult females were walking when two of them were struck by a vehicle traveling southbound, the same direction as the pedestrians, on Rooks Road approaching Rose Hills Road, according to authorities.
The vehicle fled the scene. The surviving women were unable to provide a vehicle description.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office has identified the deceased female as 36-year-old Yesenia Sanchez of Los Angeles.
Authorities reported the hospitalized woman has stable vital signs. The third woman was not injured.
LASD’s Traffic Investigation Bureau was summoned to the scene and distraught family members arrived at the road closure near the Rose Hills Road/605 Freeway.
