SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Dec. 31 (KNN) — Embattled Chiquita Canyon Landfill announced it will cease operations effective tomorrow, January 1, according to a letter from its district manager.
The landfill has been at the center of a yearslong battle with locals over significant health issues stemming from a fire burning underground for years in what the company calls an Elevated Temperature Landfill (ETLF) event.
Chiquita Canyon, LLC District Manager Steve Cassulo said in a letter to the Castaic Community Advisory Committee that the company sees no economic viability in operating the location. Key News Network obtained a copy of the letter.
The letter ended in part by stating, “Chiquita had wished to maintain its crucial role in the community’s solid waste management system, but has made the difficult decision to close its active waste disposal operations.”
They plan on remaining committed to working with federal, state, regional and local authorities to protect public health and continue addressing the ETLF event.
