The LAFD was dispatched at 1:17 a.m. Saturday to a major emergency structure fire on the 800 block of East Manchester Avenue in the Green Meadows neighborhood within South Los Angeles.

Upon arrival, they found a one-story commercial building well involved in flames with heavy fire showing through the roof. The firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack with a forceful entry into the structure to battle the flames in the interior, according to LAFD Captain, Public Information Officer Adam VanGerpen at the scene.

After around 10 minutes into battling the blaze, the structure became compromised with flames through the roof. At that point, firefighters backed out of the fire, stated VanGerpen.

A total of 113 firefighters were on the scene with a knockdown within 75 minutes. After the knockdown was achieved, a search and rescue was conducted inside the building where one victim was located deceased, reported VanGerpen.

A thorough search was still being conducted at the time of this report, but so far, there is one confirmed fatality.

VanGerpen said that they initially thought the building was vacant, however, it does appear to be a cannabis grow operation.

Investigators immediately responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.

There were no reported injuries and no other buildings were threatened.
