Downey, Los Angeles County, CA: Street racers that attempted to flee a street takeover from Compton, failed to get away after their Hellcat Jeep caught fire early Monday morning, May 22, just before 1:30 a.m.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Compton Station deputies were attempting to clear multiple street takeovers in Compton when an LASD helicopter spotted a dark colored Jeep Hellcat SUV fleeing the area at a high rate of speed and tracked the vehicle as it entered the freeway.
The vehicle then began tracking eastward on the 105 Freeway with speeds reaching 140 mph, before it started to catch on fire.
The Jeep pulled over on the Bellflower Boulevard off-ramp in the city of Downey, where it is reported that four occupants ran from the vehicle. Two were quickly located while the other two remain outstanding.
Firefighters from the Downey Fire Department doused the flames while sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs officers searched the area for the two remaining suspects, who ultimately got away.
The eastbound 105 was briefly shut down for 15 minutes as crews worked to close the Bellflower Boulevard off-ramp.
