The shooting occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of North Ventura Road at Doris Avenue in the city of Oxnard.

Oxnard PD officers responded to the location after receiving several calls regarding a man walking in traffic with a sharp object in his possession, according to the department in a news release of the incident. “While on the scene, officers learned the subject had an outstanding arrest warrant for attempted murder from an unrelated stabbing incident.”

Officers made contact with the man who held a sharp object in his hand. After multiple commands given by officers, the man did not comply and an officer-involved shooting occurred, reported the Oxnard PD.

“Officers and EMS personnel rendered aid to the subject. He was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center and is currently listed in stable condition.”

The police officers were not injured.

The Oxnard PD said in their news release that the officer’s body-worn camera captured the entire incident and the department will share footage in a Community Critical Incident Debriefing with a release date yet to be determined.

“In accordance with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation progresses.”

The Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, in conjunction with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, is investigating the incident. Detectives are requesting that anyone who might have witnessed the incident or has additional information contact Detective Adam Aguilar at (805) 385-7680 or adam.aguilar@oxnardpd.org.
