Whittier, Los Angeles County, CA: A man was taken into custody by officers after a two-hour standoff that began around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, with the man in an agitated state as he climbed onto the rooftop of a home in the city of Whittier.
How the ordeal unfolded is unclear at this time, however, Whittier Police officers were on the scene along the 10800 block of Scott Avenue trying to coax a possibly intoxicated man off the rooftop of a single-story house that was not his home.
The man refused and wandered up and down the rooftop.
Numerous PA announcements were conducted with no luck. At one point, officers utilized a ladder to attempt to gain access to the suspect, however, the area he was standing on was too steep for police to drop down.
At one point, the man began ripping expensive solar panels off the roof in front of officers, ignoring orders for him to stop.
Around 2:45 a.m., the suspect began hopping rooftops to evade police officers.
The suspect jumped at least four different properties, jumping across them as police attempted to follow him on foot.
Just before 3:00 a.m., the suspect suddenly decided to cooperate and was able to climb down from the roof of a house before taken into police custody.
Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responded to assess the man, but he denied medical transport.
Whittier PD is investigating the incident.
