Burbank, Los Angeles County, CA: A man shot by Burbank Police Department officers in front of a busy Home Depot Saturday afternoon, was transported to a trauma center where he was pronounced deceased.
The incident unfolded around 4 p.m., May 27, when the Burbank Police Department received a phone call from a man claiming he was in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Home Depot located at 1200 South Flower Street in the city of Burbank, armed with a gun and was going to shoot people, according to the Burbank PD.
“The man provided the Communications Center operator with the make and color of the vehicle he was in and the location in the parking lot,” stated the Burbank PD in their official news release of the incident.
Upon arrival of officers, the man was located still seated in his vehicle. Burbank PD said the officers and the man had a brief verbal exchange followed by the suspect’s aggressive actions which precipitated an officer-involved shooting.
The department said officers immediately summoned medical aid. The Burbank Fire Department responded and transported the man to Providence Holy Cross Trauma Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
The officers were not injured during the shooting.
Bystanders stated there was a large police presence at the Home Depot before shots suddenly rang out in the parking lot.
The entire parking lot was locked down following the shooting, with many people trapped and unable to get to their vehicles to immediately leave.
Key News Network spoke with customer Shan at the location regarding the incident. Shan said that after he had parked and began approaching the store, police started to convene on the parking lot. He said the store employees were motioning toward everyone to come inside.
Shan said he saw a tall Hispanic man with a blue shirt on the other side of the parking lot with his hands behind his head with the police surrounding him.
“But it was a lot a chaos,” Shan said. He then went into the store at that point, where a lot of people were not fully aware as to what was going on. As people shopped, more and more police sirens were heard.
Shan said that the customers were then told by employees to get to the back of the store. Everyone then began to know what was going on at that point, according to Shan.
Shan said he heard what sounded like a dozen shots all at one time, not too long after he entered the store. At that point, everyone started to panic. Shan said it was “surreal.”
Burbank PD stated that the identity of the deceased is not being released at this time pending identification by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
Burbank Police detectives, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice were notified and responded to the scene as per protocol for any shooting involving an officer.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the
