Downey, Los Angeles County, CA: As personnel worked hard to free a trapped driver from a crushed truck that slammed into the back of a semi on a freeway early Thursday morning, California Highway Patrol officers noticed and stopped a vehicle that somehow entered the closed crash scene, putting personnel in danger.
Downey Fire Department and CHP received a call around 12:45 a.m., Feb. 2, for a truck that crashed into the rear of a semi truck on the southbound 5 and the 605 Freeways in the city of Downey.
Upon arrival, CHP and DFD located one patient trapped which prompted firefighters to ask for more resources to respond.
Santa Fe Springs Fire and Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene along with Heavy Rescue.
Firefighters cut through and tore off the mangled roof of the truck to access the driver wedged inside the totaled vehicle.
The injured patient was successfully extricated from what appeared to be a pickup truck and was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time and under investigation.
CHP had lanes closed in the area of the crash, but one vehicle somehow managed to enter the scene almost hitting personnel.
Multiple CHP officers stopped the vehicle and had the driver exit the sedan. CHP officers conducted a Field Sobriety test on the driver and shortly after, he was taken into custody.
