Los Angeles police officers along with Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded to the reported collision shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the 13200 block of West Van Nuys Boulevard at San Fernando Road in Pacoima.

Upon arrival, officers and firefighters found a full-size pickup truck that had impacted an LAFD paramedic rescue ambulance.

According to the LAFD, the rescue ambulance was responding to a medical emergency when it was struck broadside by a civilian pickup truck at the intersection of Van Nuys and San Fernando Road.

The pickup truck continued on to collide with a nearby utility pole badly trapping the two adult occupants in the wreckage of their severely damaged truck before being extricated by a team of LAFD first responders, reported the LAFD.

LAFD’s Heavy Rescue responded, and crews were able to free the trapped patients by 1:00 a.m.

Both patients were transported to a regional trauma center in critical condition, according to the LAFD. The two male LAFD paramedics were able to self-extricate from the wrecked ambulance with minor to moderate injuries.

The injured paramedics were taken to an area hospital in fair condition for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to the LAFD.

The initial medical emergency the paramedic team was responding to, was quickly quickly handled successfully by another LAFD crew, reported the fire department.

LAPD officers had declared the incident a crime scene, so it is unknown at this time if alcohol is a considered factor in the cause of the crash.
