Martinez was severely injured when an SUV slammed into multiple cadets with Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Recruit Class #464 during a 6 a.m. run on Mills Avenue just south of Trumball Street in South Whittier on November 16, 2022.

A procession was held overnight into Saturday morning from the location of Martinez’s death at the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office on the 1100 block of North Mission Road in Los Angeles.

Key News Network video from the November incident showed multiple recruits being transported by ambulances, helicopter and squad cars after being struck by an SUV.

The video also shows the driver of the SUV, Nicholas Gutierrez, sitting on the curb toward the end of the video. The driver was not believed to be under the influence and he claimed at the time that he was having “a medical emergency.”
