The incident unfolded at approximately 12:15 a.m. when Chino police officers responded to a report of a domestic violence assault with a deadly weapon in the 1400 block of Monte Vista Avenue in the city of Chino.

According to the Chino PD, the victim reported that her boyfriend, Jose Martinez, a 47-year-old resident of Rialto, was attempting to force her into a vehicle. Martinez then slammed the victim’s head into a light pole and struck her multiple times. The suspect then forced the victim into the car but she was able to escape. The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Chino PD detectives responded and continued the investigation into the incident.

At 11:30 a.m., detectives located Martinez in the city of Fontana and attempted a traffic stop, according to the Chino PD. Martinez used his vehicle to ram into two police vehicles and then fled from the stop, leading police on a high-speed pursuit that ended in the 10800 block of Kadota Avenue in the city of Montclair.

The Chino PD press release of the incident stated, “Martinez refused to exit the vehicle, and Crisis Negotiators attempted to deescalate the situation and negotiate a peaceful surrender. The negotiations continued for over an hour before Martinez abruptly exited the vehicle while pointing a dark colored object and advancing towards officers in a two-handed shooting stance, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred. Officers immediately provided medical aid to Martinez, and he was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.”

The Chino PD reported that the object Martinez pointed at the officers appeared to be a portable battery pack. The department released two photos on social media showing how Martinez was in a shooting stance while pointing the object at officers shortly before the officer-involved shooting. The images were captured on an officer’s body-worn camera and a Chino Police drone at the scene.

The shooting is the subject of several investigations, according to the Chino PD, with a separate administrative investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting to determine if the shooting was within policy.

The investigation is active and ongoing and the Chino PD is urging anyone with information to contact Detective Gregory at (909) 334-3136.
