SANTA ANA, Calif., Dec. 2 (KNN) – The Santa Ana Police Department discovered that the man they shot and killed armed with a rifle Sunday evening was holding a replica of the weapon.
Santa Ana police officers responded to the area of North Broadway and East First Street at 5:30 p.m. for a suspect armed with a rifle in the downtown Santa Ana area.
According to the SAPD, the man was reported loading the rifle. When officers arrived at the scene, an officer-involved shooting occurred. It is unknown what led to the shooting at this time.
The suspect, a Hispanic male in his 30s, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased, according to the SAPD.
The street was full of evidence markers from shots fired, as seen in the KNN video. Initial information gathered at the scene was that the suspect’s gun was a fake, which the SAPD later confirmed.
Santa Ana PD had both north and southbound lanes of Broadway closed as they investigated the fatal officer-involved shooting.
The Santa Ana PD reported no injuries to officers or bystanders during the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and more details will follow.
