LEBEC, Calif., Dec. 23 (KNN) — At least one person appears to have died in a crash involving a semi into a canal in Lebec early Sunday morning.
According to off-the-record information from a law enforcement official later at the scene, drones showed at least one person deceased inside the semi-truck.
The semi-truck crashed into a canal just before 5 a.m. on the northbound side of Interstate 5, approximately three-quarters of a mile south of Laval Road East in Kern County, according to authorities.
Kern County Fire initially responded to the scene, but the operation was later handed over to Kern Search and Rescue for a possible recovery operation. The status of any occupants inside the truck remained unknown, and it was not initially confirmed whether there were any fatalities.
California Office of Emergency Services was dispatched to assess the possibility of a hazardous materials leak into the canal.
No further details are available at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
