DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, May 19 (KNN) — A Los Angeles Police Department patrol vehicle was stolen from an officer early Sunday morning and proceeded to involve two civilian vehicles in a horrific crash at a Downtown Los Angeles intersection.
At approximately 3:30 a.m., an LAPD officer working a security detail at 12th Street and Figueroa was approached by a suspect who managed to enter her vehicle. The suspect drove off with the police vehicle and at some point, the officer was ejected from the vehicle, according to preliminary information released by the LAPD regarding the incident.
“The suspect continued north of Figueroa where he was involved in a collision at 8th and Fig. After the collision, he continued northbound Fig where the vehicle came to rest at 7th and Fig,” according to an LAPD statement.
The suspect attempted to flee, but was located and apprehended by officers, as seen in Key News Network video from the scene.
The traffic collision left two vehicles with significant collision damage, along with the LAPD vehicle found into a pole. The LAPD reported that the officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition.
At least one occupant of one of the vehicles involved in the initial collision was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition, as reported from the scene. Details regarding any additional victims are not known at this time.
A witness at the scene, who declined to be identified, stated that the officer was dragged by the suspect in the police cruiser for an unknown distance.
The LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division responded to the scene and will be handling the investigation.
